The West Taratahi Trails Group was formed by a group of like minded locals keen to see safer access for residents and tourists alike to enjoy Norfolk Road on foot and cycle.

The response from locals has seen the project scope focus on Stage 1  - approx 10km up Norfolk Road with a small divergence into Chester Road to access the West Taratahi Community Hall.

An overview of the project and progress to date is available  here.

The group are active and update regularly on Facebook,

or you can email us to get in touch

Current Status

Having completed the technical mapping information for the trail  a full traffic safety audit was undertaken in mid- January thanks to  funding from Ka Pai Carterton.

The traffic safety audit report contained a number of helpful suggestions and will be submitted to CDC where WTTG are seeking formal approval at their 29 March meeting.

From there, the focus will be on crafting applications for funding to construct the trail for submission to relevant community funders, and speaking with and hearing from residents and locals.

To date WTTG has engaged with residents and landowners, Carterton District Council, People and Places Advisory Group and the general public via the Carterton Crier, word of mouth, and the Facebook page. The group would now love an opportunity to share their proposal with locals and hear the areas where you might be able to add insights and value, particularly:

  • Trail beautification – perhaps individuals or businesses would like to adopt or sponsor an area of the trail?

  • Your stories – Tell us your local cultural and historical story

  • Adding value - Consider how we might choose to add value to the trail – user experiences, benches, tables, plantings and places of interest

So what can you do?

  • Share WTTG's progress and get people involved.

  • Come along to the Community Info Evening @ the Watermill Bakery, 6- 6.30pm Wednesday 29th March - The pizzas are on us! RSVP to Murray on 021 1214340 with name and number of bases required so we can make sure we have enough pizzas for all.

  • West Taratahi Community Hall 12noon, Sunday 14th MayCome along and have a listen to the trail plans and next step from midday, enjoy a free sausage sizzle and a community catch up. Check out this local community resource and the new developments – the wonderful community garden, the new kitchen area and heating.

WTTG would really love your involvement so please come along to one or both of these events and get tagging your friends on Facebook so they can broaden the network.
